Girls Who Surf: Nohea Marlow

Girls Who Surf™ highlights rad female surfers all over the world – exploring their passion for surfing and what it means to them. Meet Nohea Marlow, a surfer based in Honolulu, Hawaii & listen to her story here.

Hi, my name is Nohea and I’m a Girl Who Surfs.

Where are you from and how long have you been surfing?

I’m originally from Pasadena, California and I’ve been living in Honolulu, Hawaii for about 12 years. I’ve been surfing for eight or nine years.

Why do you surf and what does it mean you?

I love to surf because I love being in the ocean, connecting to nature and there’s just a joy you get from riding a wave that you can get doing anything else. I grew up synchronized swimming so, for me, it kind of felt like a natural progression to go from dancing in the water to dancing on the water or with the wave and I love that surfing gives you that opportunity to connect with yourself and express yourself in that way.

Describe your hometown and what it is like being a surfer there.

Honolulu is an amazing place to live and surf because there’s so many great surf breaks. The people are really friendly. It’s beautiful everywhere you go and there’s just a level and amount of great surfers here that is really inspiring.

What is your favorite local surf spot and why?

My favorite local surf break is probably a break over at Diamond Head.

What do you love about your local female surf community?

I love the local female surf community because there’s really a lot of women here who surf.

It’s nice to show up to a surf break and see other women supporting each other and cheering each other on. When you live on an island, that sense of community is actually really important. It’s something that I’ve always been really grateful for having here in Hawaii.
