Girls Who Surf: Rachel Fleming

Girls Who Surf™ highlights female surfers around the world, exploring their passion for surfing and what it means to them. Meet Rachel Fleming (@rachfleming) from the Australian coast and hear her story.

Hi, my name is Rachel Fleming and I’m one of many females who surfs.

Where are you from and how long have you been surfing?

I’m from the east coast of Australia, Sydney, but I’ve been lucky to live all along the coastline in some beautiful places. I’ve been surfing from a very young age, probably since I was four or five.

Why do you surf and what does it mean to you?

I surf because it’s fun, and I also think it’s very important for everybody to get their fix of nature and surfing is a great way of putting yourself out there in the natural environment and making fun out of it.

Describe your hometown and what it is like being a surfer where you live.

Where I’m living now is a beautiful small town and being surfer here is so special because when you’re in the water you don’t see a lot of development, you see mostly these phenomenal natural scenery and it’s so special.

What is your favorite local surf spot and why?

I can’t reveal the name of my favorite local spot because this isn’t my hometown, but I can say it’s my favorite because when all of the conditions line up and you just have this beautiful window of off-shore, crystal clear blue water, blue skies, and you’re just surrounded by these incredible scenes and small rolling waves it’s just so special.

What do you love about your local female surf community?

What I love about my local female surf community the most is that they’re out there and giving it a shot. In sometimes challenging conditions, I think it’s important to have female energy in the lineup.
