Girls Who Surf: Sophie Falzone

Girls Who Surf™ highlights rad female surfers all over the world – exploring their passion for surfing and what it means to them. Meet Sophie Falzone, a surfer based in Jacksonville, Florida & listen to her story here.

Hi, my name is Sophie Falzone and I’m a girl who surfs.

Where are you from and how long have you been surfing?

I’m from Jacksonville, Florida. I’m 23 years old, and I started surfing at the age of four and started competing in surf contests at the age of seven.

Why do you surf and what does it mean you?

I’ve been surfing my whole life. I don’t remember a time when I didn’t surf. Surfing has just given me so many great lifelong friendships and amazing experiences and I love the ocean and being out there, it’s just so freeing and fun.

Describe your hometown and what it is like being a surfer there.

My hometown has such a great surfing community. I’m very lucky to have grown up where there’s so much support. Every time I paddle out I see someone I know – I always enjoy talking and surfing with everyone. They’re all like family to me.

What is your favorite local surf spot and why?

We have two great surf spots that are my go to here in Jacksonville – the Jacksonville Beach Pier or the Mayport Poles. They’re my favorite because they just break the best and they’re the most consistent.

What do you love about your local female surf community?

We have such a large female surfing community here in Jacksonville and I love that. We all just support each other and push each other to the next level while still having fun. We have a large organization here called Sister of the Sea that is dedicated just to supporting female surfing of all ages. We have a pretty great up and coming next generation of girl surfers, so it’s been pretty great supporting them and surfing with them too.
